WHAT IS JUJITSU?
Jujitsu (also commonly spelled "Jujutsu" or "Jiu-Jitsu") is one of the oldest styles of martial arts, dating back over 1000 years. Since that time, hundreds of styles of jujitsu have evolved. The styles practiced at the Popkin-Brogna Self Defense Center, called Daitoryu Aikijujutsu Roppokai and Goshin Budo Jujutsu have been proven effective through hundreds of years of practical testing.
Jujitsu students learn striking, joint-locking, grappling, falling, but most of all, balance breaking techniques. A basic premise of Jujitsu is the ability to break the balance of the attacker easily. This allows the Jujitsu practitioner the ability to control a situation, deciding the type of response necessary to end the conflict.
Size and strength have no bearing on the outcome of an altercation. Timing, speed, technique, and decisive action allow the jujitsu practitioner to effectively deal with problems.
Jujitsu is also a "grandfather" martial art. Many modern arts have their origin in Jujitsu. Aikido, Judo, Hapkido, many styles of Karate, and countless others can all trace their history back to Jujitsu.
The Popkin-Brogna Self Defense Center has programs designed for men, women and children ages 4-up. Jujitsu has been used in Japan for centuries as a way to develop mind, body, and spirit. The teaching methods used at our school have proven to be the most effective available. In addition to the physical aspects of self-defense, the individual benefits of confidence, self-esteem, patience, and discipline last a lifetime.
